星空の下をドライブするのは、とてもすてきな時間です。しかし街灯のない暗い道は、とても危険な場所でもあります。
ある夜、イギリスに住むパーシー・ショウは、道端で何かが光ったのに気づきます。よく見るとそれは一匹の猫で、車のライトが猫の目に反射した光でした。
「これだ！」と思ったショウは、そのひらめきをすぐに形にしました。小さなガラス玉を使って、車のライトを反射させる安全装置を作ったのです。この小さな装置を道路の端に埋め込むと、車が道から外れて起こる事故が大幅に減りました。
この装置は「キャッツアイ」と名付けられ、今でも世界中の道路で、夜の安全に目を光らせています。

Driving under the starry sky is a truly wonderful experience. But roads without streetlights can also be very dangerous.
One night, Percy Shaw, who lived in England, noticed something shining by the roadside. Looking closer, he saw that it was a cat, and the glow came from his car’s headlights reflecting in the cat’s eyes.
“That’s it!” Shaw thought, and he quickly turned his inspiration into reality. Using small glass beads, he created a safety device that reflected car headlights. When these tiny devices were embedded along the edges of roads, accidents from cars veering off the road were greatly reduced.
This device was named the “cat’s eye,” and even today it keeps watch over drivers’ safety on roads all around the world.
