「この服、まだ着られるのに捨てるのはもったいない」。ある日メンバーの一人が言った言葉をきっかけに、アベ・ピエールは古着を集め、修理して販売することを思いつきます。最初は小さな取り組みでしたが、丁寧に直された古着は安くて質が良いと評判に。何より「買うことで支援になる」という想いが、多くの人の心を動かしました。

In post-World War II France, Father Abbé Pierre founded a community called “Emmaus” for people who had lost their way. They lived there, working together and supporting each other.
One day, a member’s remark, “These clothes are still wearable; it’s a waste to throw them away,” prompted Abbé Pierre to collect, repair, and sell secondhand clothing. Although it began as a small endeavor, the meticulously repaired garments quickly gained a reputation for being affordable and of high quality. Above all, the concept that “purchasing them provides support” resonated deeply with many.
Emmaus’s secondhand clothing embodies kindness, compassion, and a respect for material goods. This ethos continues to be passed down and is cherished throughout France.
