「この服、まだ着られるのに捨てるのはもったいない」。ある日メンバーの一人が言った言葉をきっかけに、アベ・ピエールは古着を集め、修理して販売することを思いつきます。最初は小さな取り組みでしたが、丁寧に直された古着は安くて質が良いと評判に。何より「買うことで支援になる」という想いが、多くの人の心を動かしました。
エマユスの古着には、優しさや思いやり、「ものを大切にする心」が詰まっています。その精神は今も受け継がれ、フランス中で愛され続けています。
In post-World War II France, Father Abbé Pierre founded a community called Emmaus for those who had lost their way. Together, they lived, worked, and supported one another.
One day, a simple remark from a member—“These clothes are still wearable; it’s a waste to throw them away”—inspired Abbé Pierre to start collecting, repairing, and selling secondhand clothing. What began as a humble effort soon earned a reputation for quality and affordability. More importantly, the idea that “buying these clothes is an act of support” struck a deep chord with many.
Emmaus secondhand clothes carry a spirit of valuing both things and people. This ethos lives on, cherished throughout France to this day.
