かつて、音楽には決まりごとがありました。曲を書くのは作曲家、歌うのは歌手──それがプロの仕事とされていました。あのエルヴィス・プレスリーでさえ、自分で曲は作らず、誰かが作った曲を歌っていました。
そこに「ビートルズ」の若い4人が現れます。彼らは大好きなロックやR&Bに影響を受けながらも、自分たちの手でメロディーを作り、自分たちの言葉で歌詞を書きました。その歌は、誰かに与えられたものではなく、まぎれもなく「彼ら自身の歌」でした。
徴兵制がなくなり、戦争の記憶が少しずつ遠のく中、若者たちは「自由」を求めていました。ビートルズの音楽は、抑圧から解き放たれた若い心に共鳴し、やがて世界中を熱狂の渦に巻き込んでいきます。
こうやって人生と音楽は、自らの手で作り出すものとなっていったのです。

Once upon a time, music had strict rules. Writing songs was the job of a composer, and singing them was the job of a singer—that’s just what it meant to be a professional. Even Elvis Presley didn’t write his own songs; he sang what others wrote for him.
Then came four young men known as The Beatles. Drawing inspiration from their beloved rock and R&B, they crafted their own melodies and wrote lyrics in their own words. Their songs weren’t handed down to them by anyone else; they were undeniably their own.
As conscription ended and memories of war gradually faded, young people were searching for freedom. The Beatles’ music resonated deeply with young hearts longing to break free from suppression, eventually sweeping the entire world into a frenzy.
And so, life and music became something to be created with one’s own hands.
