デュシャンは、芸術を「美しいもの」と信じて疑わなかった当時の常識を、真っ向から否定しました。作品とは見るものではなく、考えるもの。《泉》は「これは芸術か？」という問いを私たちに投げつけ、その問いそのものを作品としたのです。
「見るためのアート」から「考えるためのアート」へ。デュシャンが壊したのは、芸術の枠ではなく、私たちの思い込みでした。美とは何か、アートとは何か。それはもはや作家の手の中ではなく、受け手の頭の中にあるのです。

Duchamp directly challenged the conventional belief of his time that art was meant to be “beautiful.” He argued that art is not something to be viewed, but something to be thought about. Fountain asks us, “Is this art?” and turns that question into the artwork itself.
