Mobile Suit Gundam—the pinnacle of robot anime, and a legend still spoken of today. What director Yoshiyuki Tomino brought to this work was an uncompromising sense of “reality.”
At the time, robot anime usually featured heroes piloting giant robots to defeat villains from outer space—straightforward stories where good and evil were clearly defined. But Tomino shattered that formula. He depicted robots not as “toys,” but as weapons of war built to kill.
The mobile suits in Gundam are incredibly cool machines, yet at the same time, they are cold instruments that take human lives. The protagonists, forced to confront harsh realities and grow while struggling with their inner conflicts, gave the story depth and drew in countless viewers.
Why do people live, and why do they fight? By directly facing such fundamental questions, Gundam broke free from the label of “just for children,” becoming a work that resonates across generations.
