プロダクト・デザイナーのダグ・ディーツは、病院でMRIの機械を前に泣く少女を見てショックを受けた。自信をもってデザインしたMRIの機械が、子どもにとっては恐怖の対象でしかなかったのだ。
この経験から彼は「泣き声を笑い声に変える」と決意し、「MRI検査を、冒険の旅に！」というアイデアにたどり着く。無機質な検査室を、宇宙船に改造。「これから発射する。危ないからじっとしていて。」キャプテンに扮した技師がそう伝えると、子どもはじっと動かなくなり、スムーズに検査が進む。怖がっていたMRIの音も、宇宙船のエンジン音となると、子どもたちのワクワク感を高めることに役立つ。
このアドベンチャーシリーズが導入されると、子どもたちに投与される鎮静剤の使用率が80%から10%に激減。そして検査室には笑顔と共に、「もう一度！」という声が溢れるようになった。
Product designer Doug Dietz was shocked to see a little girl crying in front of an MRI machine at the hospital. The MRI machine, which he had confidently designed, was nothing but an object of fear for the child.
From this experience he decided to “turn crying into laughter” and arrived at the idea that “MRI scans can be an adventurous journey”. He converted an inorganic inspection room into a spaceship. “I’m going to fire now. Stay still, it’s dangerous.” When the technician, dressed as a captain, tells the child this, the child stops moving still and the examination proceeds smoothly. The sound of an MRI, which they were afraid of, can help increase children’s excitement when it becomes the sound of a spaceship’s engine.
Once this Adventure Series was introduced, the rate of sedation dropped dramatically from 80% to 10%. And the exam rooms were filled with smiles and cries of “Again !“.
