日光の深い緑に包まれた東照宮は、徳川家康公をまつり、天下泰平を祈る場として、人々の崇敬を集めています。絢爛豪華な建造物群の中でも、陽明門の「逆さ柱」は、その心で来訪者を魅了します。
金箔と白漆が織りなす華麗な陽明門。その12本の柱のうち、1本だけが紋様を逆向きに彫られています。
完成と同時に崩壊が始まるという日本人の美意識により、あえてつくられた不完全さ。そこには永遠の美と平和を願った先人の想いが感じられます。
違いを受け入れ、さまざまな美しさを尊重する。現代社会においてますます大切となっている心に、逆さ柱は気づかせてくれるのです。

Nestled in Nikko’s deep greenery, Toshogu Shrine enshrines Tokugawa Ieyasu and, as a sacred locus of prayers for lasting peace, continues to inspire reverence. Among its resplendent World Heritage structures, the Yomeimon’s famed “Inverted Pillar” captivates visitors with its arresting aesthetic.
Gleaming with gold leaf and white lacquer, Yomeimon boasts twelve pillars—yet on one, the motif is carved in reverse. This intentional flaw reflects a Japanese sensibility: that perfection marks the onset of decline. In it, we sense the hopes of earlier generations for enduring beauty and peace.
To embrace difference and honor diverse forms of beauty—values ever more vital today—the “Inverted Pillar” serves as a quiet reminder.
