In his film Waves, director Trey Edward Shults turned traditional filmmaking on its head. Rather than following the conventional path of writing the story first and adding music later, he boldly reversed the process—letting music shape the story.
Shults began by identifying the emotional essence of each scene, selecting tracks that resonated deeply with those feelings. From there, he built the narrative around the music, composing a screenplay that flowed organically from sound. The result is a film where rhythm drives plot, and melodies become mirrors of the characters’ inner worlds.
