In the movie Waves, director Trey Edward Shults fundamentally overturned the “common sense” of filmmaking. Instead of the usual order of “writing the story and then choosing the music,” he daringly opted for the extremely unconventional approach of “weaving the story from the music.”
Director Shults first discerned the emotional core of each scene and carefully selected music that deeply resonated with it. He then used the music as the starting point for the narrative, meticulously constructing the screenplay. The resulting Waves became a film where sound guides the story, and melodies delicately echo the characters’ inner feelings.
