In 1987, David Bowie performed an open-air concert near the Berlin Wall in West Germany. Unusually, a quarter of the speakers were aimed not at the audience, but toward the wall—toward East Berlin.
During the show, Bowie addressed the crowd with a heartfelt message: “Let’s all wish each other happiness tonight—for our friends on the other side of the wall.” Then he launched into a stirring performance of “Heroes,” a song that echoed over the divide.
